Title: Vicariance and dispersal: a historical biogeographic perspective from clypeasteroid echinoids

Conference · · Geol. Soc. Am., Abstr. Programs; (United States)
OSTI ID:6598409

Clypeasteroid echinoids belong to marine benthos and are generally confined to shelf habitats. Distribution of 110 extant clypeasteroid species in 29 marine geographic regions makes the basis for recognition of the modern biogeographic patterns in this group. Major clypeasteroid biogeographic units, or bioprovinces, are identified by cluster analysis. The pattern of clypeasteroid endemism and species diversity in these biogeographic units is consistent with those observed in other marine shallow-water groups; both the latitudinal and the longitudinal gradients in diversity are evident. However, the mosaic distribution of clypeasteroid species in the Indo-Pacific realm, with a number of areas of endemism and with the ranges of nonendemic species overlapping in Indonesia, supports the vicariance-and-refuge model for the Indo-West Pacific focus in diversity. The hierarchical pattern of interrelationships among the clypeasteroid biogeographic units is recognized by cladistic analysis. When compared to the taxonomic cladogram of clypeasteroids, this pattern clearly indicates a number of dispersal events that must have happened in the biogeographic history of this group.
