We consider a staged [ital Z] pinch in which an annular plasma implodes onto a coaxial wire. The physical model involves conservation of magnetic flux created by the current initially trapped in the wire plasma and adiabatic heating. It leads to magnetic-field and current amplification with a current rise time of 4[times]10[sup 15]A/sec. At peak current levels approaching 5 MA the wire plasma attains a density [ital n]=10[sup 24] cm[sup [minus]3], a temperature [ital T]=10 keV, and [ital n][tau][gt]10[sup 15] cm[sup [minus]3]sec.
