Title: Sulfidation-resistant alloy for coal gasification service. Monthly report, October 1-October 31, 1977. [Fe-18Cr-5Al-1Mo-1Hf]

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6567858

Work on the program except for a few mechanical tests of Phase II candidate alloys has been stopped due to lack of material required for the Phase III evaluation. The program (Phase III) is now a total of five months behind schedule. Progress reports are presented for Tasks I and II, design for sulfidation resistance, and design for mechanical behavior. Some of the accomplishments are: Task I - Samples of an Fe-18Cr-5Al-1Mo-1Hf alloy have been tested in two high pressure runs at IITRI. Two samples showed little attack after 1000 h at 1650/sup 0/F in the DOE/MPC gas mixture with 1% H/sub 2/S. The samples currently are being exposed for a second 1000 h run. Two additional samples have been exposed for 1000 h at 1500/sup 0/F in a low Btu gas mixture. Details of the test conditions and results were not available at this time and will be presented in the quarterly report next month. Task II - A summary of impact data for Fe-Cr-Al-Mo alloys is presented in graphs 1 to 3. Graph 1 indicates that increasing Al decreases the notch impact strength. However, when compared with graph 2 which shows the differences between 17 and 18 Cr steels at the low Al (4%) level, the effect does not appear to be real. All materials have the same transition temperature based on a 50% reduction in impact strength. The variation in strength at 100/sup 0/C is not consistent with Al and Cr composition variations and may be a scatter in data due to other composition and structure variables. Graph 3 shows the effect of Mo additions on behavior. Alloys with 2 to 4 Mo have 3 to 6 times the impact strength of the Mo-free alloys at 100/sup 0/C. Two alloys were analyzed for impurities that could affect impact behavior and results are presented. 1 reference, 3 figures.
