Title: Effect of heated water from the Konakovo power station on chironomid larvae in Ivan'kovo reservoir

Abstract

Comparison of data from the quantitative development of chironomid larvae in two parts of Ivan'kovo reservoir, one of which is in the zone affected by heated water from the Konakovo power station, while the other is outside this zone, has shown that the period of metamorphosis is extended among larvae in the heated zone, and that they give rise to more generations, with the result that their overall abundance is higher than in the unheated zone. At the same time the biomass of chironomids is invariably reduced in the heated zone, apparently because some of the larvae perish during the hottest time of the year and, in addition, they are intensively consumed by fishes that congregate in the heated zone.
