Pollution control: new trends update FGD systems. [Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD)]
The survey of new trends in FGD systems, noted in the 5th EPA FGD Symposium (Las Vegas 3/5-8/79), covers modifications of the lime/limestone system, including the introduction of magnesium in the scrubber loop in the form of thiosorbic lime, the addition of adipic acid, and the use of calcium chloride with formic acid as a buffer; sodium-based scrubbing; recovery systems, such as the Wellman-Lord system which recovers SO/sub 2/ as elemental sulfur by the Allied Chemical natural gas reductant process; dry scrubbing innovations, such as the sprayed aqueous carbonate process which can be run either open-loop or regenerable; and new FGD systems, including the Dowa aluminum sulfate/gypsum, citrate, and integrated cat-ox processes.
