The body of the device, consisting of 2 relatively movable sections, is lowered into a well at the end of a cable. A bow spring anchor assembly is mounted upon each of the sections in a manner that allows the sections to rotate freely and move axially relative to the bow springs until a measurement is to be made. The sections are locked to the anchor assemblies upon command from the surface and a stuck point measurement is made. A sensing means in the body of the device detects relative movement of the 2 sections and produces a linear signal representing such movement. The sensing means includes a movable spiral wedge-shaped element. (7 claims)
