Title: Parametric performance studies on fluizied-bed heat exchangers. Task 2. Experimental evaluation of multi-stage beds. Technical progress report, August 1, 1982-Decmber 31, 1982

Analyses and experiments have been made to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of single and multi-stage shallow fluidized bed heat exchangers for application to the recovery of heat from sources such as waste heat, and coal combustion or gasification. The work, conducted under Contract DE-AC22-81-PC40280 is an extension of that done previously under Contracts EC-77-C-03-1433 and DE-AC03-79-ET11348 and consists of two tasks; in Task 1, tests were conducted to investigate the effects of liquid condensate fouling on fluidized bed heat exchanger performance. The results obtained in these experiments have been reported in Reference 1. In Task 2, tests have been conducted to investigate the performance of fluidized beds which are staged using a baffle plate. In these tests, heat transfer performance in the baffle supported fluidized bed was equivalent to the enhanced performance achieved in beds supported by distributor plates. Since the open area of the baffle plate is large compared to that of the distributor plate, the pressure loss of the baffled two-stage heat exchanger was significantly less than the pressure loss for a two-stage heat exchanger having two distributor plates. The test results indicated that the amount of recirculation of bed material between the two beds was small, and the heat transfer effectiveness of staging with baffles would approach that of staging with distributor plates.
