Prediffuser for a gas turbine engine
This patent describes a gas turbine engine. It comprises: an engine case and a centerline, an axial flow compressor and an annular burner mounted in the engine case about the engine's centerline, an annular prediffuser interposed between the compressor and the burner and axially spaced therefrom, a shell surrounding and radially spaced from the burner defining a dump diffuser, the prediffuser having a pair of radially spaced annular shaped walls defining an annular passage for leading the air discharging from the compressor to the dump diffuser and then to the burner, a first portion of the spaced annular shaped walls being concentric relative to each other so as to define a vane section. The vanes are mounted between the spaced annular walls in the vane section for removing the swirl component from the swirling air discharging from the compressor, a second portion of the spaced annular walls diverging radially inwardly and outwardly relative to each other for defining a diffuser section, circumferentially spaced struts extending between the annular walls for defining therewith open ended passageways and each passageway having an axial centerline, circumferentially spaced fuel nozzles in the annular burner, each having a centerline, the centerline of the each of the fuel nozzles being in coincidence with the centerline of each of the open ended passageways so that the number of the struts equals the number of the fuel nozzles and that the area of the discharge end of the annular diffuser is relatively the same relative to what it would be without the inclusion of the struts by extending the spaced annular walls radially to compensate for the area that would be taken up by the struts that would otherwise block the flow passing through the discharge end of the diffuser had the struts not been there.
