Regional scale receptor modeling in the northeast US
Samples of atmospheric particles were collected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from May, 1980 to Dec., 1981 at 3 sampling sites in the Ohio River Valley (ORV), and over 3 weeks in July/August, 1980 in Shenandoah Valley, VA. The collected samples were analyzed by x-ray fluorescence (XRF) for elemental concentrations and their masses were determined by ..beta.. gauging at EPA. The XRF data and associated wind trajectories were used to select a subset (200) or ORV samples in the fine fraction for further analysis by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). The combined XRF and INAA data provided concentrations values for up to 40 elements. Trace element concentration ratios to Se did not show bimodal distributions, which were previously observed in samples collected downwind from the midwest US. A near constancy of the S/Se ratio over the ORV sampling sites was observed. The ratio was 1500 in ORV as compared to 3300 obtained at Shenandoah Valley. Factor analysis was not very successful for ORV data, but it yielded a regional sulfate component for Shenandoah Valley. The sulfate factor had high loadings of SO/sub 4//sup 2 -/, H/sup +/, NH/sub 4//sup +/, Se and Mn, and modest loadings of As, Sb, and Pb. Principal component analysis and multiple linear regressions were used to determine relative amounts of elements accompanying the sulfate.
