Geothermal studies in southwest New Mexico: technical completion report

Abstract

The research that has been conducted consists of three parts: (1) A detailed water chemistry study of thermal and non thermal waters in Dona Ana County, (2) a reconnaissance water chemistry study of the hot springs of southwest New Mexico, and (3) a detailed gravity and magnetic study of the Lightning Dock KGRA (Known Geothermal Resource Area) located in the Animas Valley of southwest New Mexico. The principal features resulting from this state supported research program are presented.

This final report describes the findings and conclusions of the New Mexico Team during the first project year of the Southwest Regional Geothermal Development Operations Research Project. The purpose of this project is to help realize a goal of the USDOE , Division of Geothermal Energy (DOE/DGE), to accelerate the actual commercial utilization of geothermal energy. This was done by: (1) identifying the potential for development of geothermal energy in the five-state regions of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah; and (2) identifying the actions needed to accomplish that development.

The objectives of the project were to upgrade instrumentation by analyzing species present in the atmosphere, train students in the area of air quality analysis parameters and provide an opportunity to determine baseline atmospheric concentrations of potential pollutants in the urban atmosphere of Albuquerque, New Mexico. A suite of inorganic and organic chemicals were analyzed over a one year period in Albuquerque, New Mexico to determine baseline conditions. Field Studies of Geothermal Reservoirs Rio Grande Rift, New Mexico

The Rio Grande rift provides an excellent field laboratory to study the nature of geothermal systems in an extensional environment. Much of the geologic complexity that is found in the Basin and Range is absent because the rift is located on cratonic crust with a thin and well-characterized Phanerozoic stratigraphy and tectonic history. On the other hand, the Neogene thermo-tectonic history of the rift has many parallels with the Basin and Range to the west.
