An x-ray diffraction investigation has been carried out, and the vibrational spectra have been obtained for the rhenium chloride selenide with the formula Re/sub 3/Se/sub 2/C1/sub 5/ (I), which was synthesized by a gas-transport reaction. The crystals of compound I are triclinic, and at -120/sup 0/C, a = 8.829, b = 8.928, c = 12.591 A, ..cap alpha.. = 83.30, ..beta.. = 84.59, ..gamma.. = 82.10/sup 0/, the space group is P1, and Z = 2 (diffractometer), ..gamma..Mo, 3219 reflections, R = 0.084). The structure of compound I corresponds to the doubled formula Re/sub 6/(..mu../sub 3/-Se)/sub 4/(..mu../sub 3/-Cl)/sub 4/Cl/sub 6/, the trigonal bridging Se and Cl ligands are distributed with equal probability over the faces of the Re octahedron, and (Re-Re)/sub av/ = 2.606 A. The IR and Raman spectra of compound I point out the T/sub d/ symmetry of the molecule with an alternating arrangement of the Se and Cl atoms at the vertices of a (..mu../sub 3/-X)/sub 8/ ligand cube.
