Abstract

Results are presented on the inclusive scattering process a + p ..-->.. c + X where a and c are any of ..pi../sup + -/, K/sup + -/, p or anti p. The data were taken at 100 and 175 GeV/c incident momentum using the Fermilab Single Arm Spectrometer. A vertex detector was also used to measure the associated charged multiplicity. The x dependences of the inclusive cross section exhibit the power law behavior expected from various fragmentation models. 12 references.

Measurement of Charged Hadron Inclusive Reactions in the Projectile Fragmentation Region at 100 GeV and 175 GeV

Differential cross sections for the inclusive processes $$a + p \to c + x$$, where a and c can be any of $$\pi^{\pm}, k^{\pm}, p$$ or $$\bar{p}$$, were measured at 100 and 175 GeV using the Single Arm Spectrometer Facility of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The measurement covered a range in x from 0.12 to 1.0 and in $$P_{\perp}$$ from O.l to l.25 GeV/c. Emphasis was placed in the analysis on the beam fragmentation region. An experiment was performed to study the inclusive processes a/sup +/ + A ..-->.. c/sup + -/ + X, where a and c are either ..pi.., K, or p. The nuclear targets used were C, Al, Cu, Ag, and Pb. The Feynman x and p/sub T/ dependence of particle c was studied using the Fermilab Single Arm Spectrometer. In this paper cross sections are presented as a function of x at transverse momenta of 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c for each target nucleus.
