Title: Prevention of temper embrittlement of chromium-molybdenum steel vessels by use of low-silicon forged shells

Conference · · Proc., Am. Pet. Inst., Refin. Dep.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6504728

Temper embrittlement can be a threat to the safety and reliability of heavy-wall 2/one quarter/Cr-1Mo pressure vessels. To prevent temper embrittlement, low-silicon vacuum carbon deoxidized forged shell can be employed. The uniform distribution of mechanical properties through the wall thickness of a 12-inch-thick 2/one quarter/Cr-1Mo shell forging has been confirmed. A weld metal with properties that are nearly compatible with those of the base metal has been developed. 12 refs.
