Five panels made up of representatives of DOE, the electric power and coal industries, coal users, and environmental agencies and groups testified at a two-day hearing to assess the status of programs demonstrating clean coal technologies that will permit the use of abundant coal reserves. Seven of the witnesses described programs which DOE has identified as potential award winners. The hearing began with an overview by DOE personnel on the implementation of Public Law 99-190, which funds the demonstration program. The hearing record includes general discussion which followed the presentation of each panel. An appendix with additional statements and material submitted for the record follows the testimony of the 23 witnesses.
