Prediction of harmonic distortion in semiconductor lasers driven below threshold

A simple analysis is used here to show that high harmonic distortion is to be expected even at low frequencies when a semiconductor laser is driven below threshold by the modulating current. Although dynamic circuit models and sophisticated convergence methods of analysis predict the harmonic distortion more accurately, they may not be warranted in cases where the laser is driven well below threshold. In such conditions, the crude but simple equations reported here will be useful for obtaining a quick estimate of the distortion.
