Title: Method of and device for extinguishing burning gases

Abstract

An apparatus is described for extinguishing burning gases formed by evaporation of a low-temperature liquefied gas stored in tanks and accidently ignited upon entering the atmosphere. The apparatus is useful for liquefied gas tankers, the gas containers of which are provided with degassing posts. The apparatus introduces a halogenated hydrocarbon as an extinguishing agent into the burning gases at the base of the flame for achieving a chemical reaction with the burning gases. The extinguishing agent may be difluorochlorobromomethane or trifluorobromomethane or their mixtures. Along with the halogenated hydrocarbon, preferably, combustion air is supplied because the extinguishing agent has its maximum effect when the gases burn stoichiometrically. (9 claims)
