Oxidation of a nickel(II) complex with an unsaturated macrocyclic ligand in aqueous solutions. A pulse radiolytic study

The kinetics of oxidation of Ni/sup II/L by Br/sub 2//sup -/ and OH radicals in aqueous solutions were studied. The kinetics of the aquation reaction Ni/sup III/LBr/sup 2 +/ ..-->.. Ni/sup III/L + Br/sup -/ was found to be base catalyzed. The pK of the reaction Ni/sup III/L/sup 3 +/ in equilibrium Ni/sup III/L(OH)/sup 2 +/ was determined, pK = 3.45, and the redox potential of the couple Ni/sup III/L/sup 3 +//Ni/sup II/L/sup 2 +/ is 1.34 V. The mechanism of decomposition of Ni/sup III/L is discussed. The spectra of the different intermediates are reported.
