Weibull analysis of flexural strength of a SiC/MoSi[sub 2] composite
- Applied Sciences, Inc., Cedarville, OH (United States)
Although molybdenum disilicide (MoSi[sub 2]) exhibits excellent high temperature chemical stability and a melting point of 2,010C, its poor mechanical performance has severely limited its structural applications. As a results, effort has been made recently to strengthen MoSi[sub 2] by adding a second phase reinforcing material. The results from these studies show improved mechanical performance due to second phase addition. However, the data of all the studies for the mechanical strength, mostly flexural strength, were not analyzed statistically. It is believed that, due to the brittle nature of MoSi[sub 2] and the fact that the improvement in fracture toughness of MoSi[sub 2] by second phase addition has been limited, the strength data could be scattered. Therefore, as a part of the investigation on MoSi[sub 2]-based composites, the authors have analyzed the strength data of a 20% (by volume) SiC whiskers reinforced MoSi[sub 2] composite using Weibull statistics. A wide range of strength data, indeed, was found.
