Title: Oxidation of methanol over chromium containing spinel (MgAl/sub y/Cr/sub x/O/sub 4/ where Y = 2 - x) and corundum (. cap alpha. -Al/sub y/Cr/sub x/O/sub 3/) solid solutions

The effect of the matrix on the oxidation activity of oxide catalysts was studied with 15 spinel catalysts of x = 0 to x = 2 composition and on 15 corundum catalysts of x = 0 to x = 2 composition. The spinel catalysts had higher activity and the corundum catalysts higher selectivity for partial oxidation in the oxidation of methanol with excess oxygen to carbon dioxide and formaldehyde. In both series, the catalytic activity and selectivity of catalysts containing < 10% chromium fluctuated sensitively as a function of surface composition; in this region, the active sites were electronically isolated The selectivity of the catalysts of > 10% chromium content, i.e., catalysts with mobile, averaged charges, apparently depended on the strength of oxygen, hydrogen, and methanol adsorption, which in turn depended on the matrix configuration; partial oxidation was favored by adsorption to the surface via the H atoms, but deep oxidation presupposed the presence of labile active surface oxygen and strong alcohol adsorption, probably via the oxygen atom.
