Title: Kernel migration measurements on unirradiated BISO- and TRISO-coated ThC/sub 2/ fuel particles. [HTGR]

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/6434371· OSTI ID:6434371

The kernel migration behavior of unirradiated BISO- and TRISO-coated ThC/sub 2/ was characterized under a temperature gradient in the temperature range of 1320/sup 0/ to 1865/sup 0/C. A new crucible configuration with a matrix material consisting of 25 wt% natural flake graphite and 75 wt % binder (5 wt % maleic acid, 45 wt % furfural alcohol, and 50 wt % methyl alcohol) was employed to contain the fuel particles. The ThC/sub 2/ kernel migration coefficients (KMC), which are independent of coating type (BISO or TRISO), are consistent with earlier data. The ThC/sub 2/ kernel migration coefficient determined in this study is KMC m/sup 2/.k/sec) = 2.2 exp(-3.17 x 10/sup 5//8.314T).
