A neodymium amplifier with lambda/4-decoupling and a stimulated Mandel'shtam-Brillouin scattering (SMBS) mirror is tested experimentally. The advantages of this type of amplifier compared with other schemes are discussed. A contrast approx.5 x 10/sup -3/ was obtained with lambda/4-decoupling. The performance of CCl/sub 4/ and K-8 glass SMBS mirrors was studied over a wide range of pumping energies. It is shown that breakdown of the laser medium does not cut off the wave front inversion process, so that SMBS mirrors can be used in multipass amplifier schemes. Reflection of a time-modulated pulse from an SMBS mirror with high angular directivity is demonstrated.
