Minding the corporate conscience, 1978: public-interest groups and corporate social accountability
In updating the last survey of the corporate social responsibility movement, Minding the Corporate Conscience 1974, CEP has found that: (1) issues of energy and the environment tend to dominate the movement at present; (2) there has been a marked increase in the number of organizations focusing directly or indirectly on issues of corporate social responsibility--particularly on the local level; (3) on state and national levels, public-interest lobbying groups concerned with corporate issues have become increasingly active and prominent; (4) issue-oriented public-interest law has become an active part of the U.S. judicial system within the past decade; in reaction, the last five years have seen the rise around the country of ''conservative'' public-interest law firms whose viewpoints often coincide with those of corporations; and (5) the image of public-interest groups as ''protest'' groups--working outside the system--has faded; many groups now propose and strongly advocate specific alternatives to present corporate practices. Survey data are compiled for 83 movements. Section 2 provides a listing of some of the material and local organizations concerned with issues of corporate social responsibility.
