Title: Room-temperature laser action at 4. 3[endash]4. 4 [mu] m in CaGa[sub 2]S[sub 4]:Dy[sup 3+]

Abstract

We report room-temperature mid-IR laser operation in a new low-phonon-frequency nonhygroscopic host crystal, calcium thiogallate (CaGa[sub 2 ]S[sub 4] ) . Laser action at 4.31[endash]4.38 [mu]m on the Dy[sup thinsp 3+] H[sub 11/2] 6[r arrow]H[sub 13/2] 6 transition occurred with a maximum slope efficiency of 1.6[percent].
