Depolarization characeteristics of an rf electromagnetic wave propagating in a plasma with magnetic-field fluctuations are analyzed. The depolarization of the wave which occurs at large-scale inhomogeneities is only partial; the geometric-optics approximation can be used to describe this case. In scattering by small-scale inhomogeneities, the linear conversion of normal waves is important and leads to a complete depolarization of the field over a large distance. This effect also occurs when there is a large regular component of the external magnetic field, because of a particular resonant interaction of normal waves with helical structures in the magnetic field.
