Title: Dosimetry report for the Sandia irradiator for dried sewage solids

Abstract

Gamma dose measurements were made at the Sandia Irradiator for Dried Sewage Solids. Passive plastic, chemical, and thermoluminescent dosimeters were exposed in the facility under conditions designed to simulate typical plant operation. Absolute dose and dose distribution information were obtained in air, water, compost, fruit, and sewage sludge.

  • This safety analysis report describes the Sandia Irradiator for Dried Sewage Solids (SIDSS) designed by Sandia Laboratories and assesses the hazards associated with its operation. The SIDSS consists of a conveyor system, a source plaque and associated shielding, and a gamma-source pin loading/unloading pool. The facility will be installed next to Building 6720 in Technical Area III (TA-III) in July 1978. This facility will provide Sandia Laboratories with the capability of exposing up to 8 tons per day of sewage solids to 1 Mrad absorbed dose.
  • The radiation field of the Sandia Irradiator for Dried Sewage Solids was measured. The results of the measurement are given in this report. In addition, theoretical calculations of the fields are given and then compared with the measured values. Elementary models of the radiation source geometry and irradiated product are found to be adequate and thus allow us to duplicate (through calculation) the important features of the measured fields.
  • Analyses of the hazards associated with the operation of the Sandia irradiator for dried sewage solids, as well as methods and design considerations to minimize these hazards, are presented in accordance with DOE directives.
  • Separate abstracts have been prepared for the individual papers presented at the seminar. (TFD)
  • The preliminary design of the Sewage Solids Irradiator Transportation System (SSITS) Cask is presented in this document. The SSITS cask is to be used for the transport of radioactive cesium chloride and strontium fluoride capsules which are of use in irradiators or as heat sources. The SSITS cask is approximately 1.4 m in diameter, 1.3 m high, weighs roughly 9 t, provides 33 cm of steel shielding, and can dissipate up to 5.2 kW of decay heat. The cask design criteria are identified and a description of the cask design and operation is provided. Detailed analyses of the design weremore » performed to demonstrate licensability of the cask by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Results of the analyses indicate that the preliminary design is in compliance with the pertinent regulatory requirements for licensing of a radioactive material transportation container.« less
