LNG safety: facts and fiction
A discussion covers a review of safety considerations usually incorporated into the design of LNG facilities; the two major safety requirements affecting personnel and property outside the terminal property, in Article 2120 (limits radiation flux at property line) and Article 2121 (provisions to minimize possibility of a flammable mixture of vapors under conditions of a design spill), respectively, of National Fire Protection Association Standard 59A for the production, storage, and handling of LNG; the unlikelihood of an instantaneous complete failure of a modern LNG tank because of current design, fabrication, and inspection practices, and the nature of fracture mechanics; and the need to educate the public in more realistic terms concernig LNG hazards.
