Flue gas injection underway in West Texas block 31 field
The special equipment used by Atlantic Richfield Co. in conserving natural gas by utilizing inert gas as a buffer in miscible phase displacement secondary recovery project is described. Secondary recovery equipment in the Block 31 Field in Crane County W. Tex., is taking on a new look. Recently completed by Atlantic Richfield Company, operator of the Block 31 unit, is the world's largest secondary recovery flue gas plant that provides 54 million cu ft per day of inert gas for injection. The plant, that resembles a refinery more than an oil production facility, is giving the field a new look for its 21st anniversary and new life. The multi-pay Block 31 field has pioneered in other secondary recovery efforts, too. The industry's first full-scale miscible displacement project was begun in the Devonian section. Atlantic Richfield is continuing the miscible displacement program, but utilizing inert gas and conserving valuable hydrocarbon natural gas formerly injected.
