A secondary battery is described comprising a lithium negative electrode and an opposing positive electrode comprising a material capable of intercalating lithium ions. characterized in that the positive electrode material comprises a copper vanadium bronze selected from the group consisting of: (a) compounds having the formula [beta]-Cu[sub y]V[sub 2]O[sub 5] wherein 0 < y [le] 0.55 and (b) compounds having the formula [epsilon]-Cu[sub y]V[sub 2]O[sub 5] wherein O < y [le] 0.85.
