Title: Influence of humidity during the fibre preparation process on transmission loss for ZrF/sub 4/-based optical fibres

Abstract

The influence of humidity on the transmission loss of ZrF/sub 4/-based optical fibres is clarified. Humidity increases the OH absorption loss as well as the scattering loss in the fibre. The absorption loss at 2.8 ..mu.., due to the fundamental stretching vibration of OH ions, has been reduced to 30 dB/km. It is foreseen that fluoride optical fibre with low loss at the 2-4 ..mu.. band can be realized by the extremely dry atmosphere process.
