Title: (Radiological assessments of radionuclide releases)

Abstract

As a consequence of the Chernobyl accident, data have been obtained throughout the Northern Hemisphere on the concentrations of radionuclides in air, vegetation, soil, water, and foodstuffs that could be important means of human exposure. At the IAEA's invitation, the traveler reviewed recently published data and handbook summaries. The traveler evaluated the need for revising the default values recommended in Chapter 5, Terrestrial and Aquatic Food Chain Transport,'' of IAEA Safety Series No. 57. All attempts at revision were made to keep the mathematical complexity of the models to a minimum without substantial underestimation of dose to critical population subgroups. The traveler also served as chairman of the Multiple Pathways Working Group of the Coordinated Research Program on VAMP. This group has been established to test predictions of models assessing multiple exposure pathways potentially leading to human exposure to {sup 137}Cs. Testing is carried out for major components of assessment models that predict deposition, environmental transport, food chain bioaccumulation, and subsequent uptake and retention in the human body and dose due to exposure to external gamma radiation.

  • A dose assessment for two separate normalized source terms was conducted for the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. The first source term consisted of the noble gas and iodine fission products emanating from a postulated criticality with a magnitude of 10{sup 19} fissions. The second postulated source term was 1 kg of respirable highly enriched uranium. The MELCOR Accident Consequence Code System 2 (MACCS2) (beta test) computer code was used for this assessment. Both fixed weather (e.g., constant weather assumed throughout the accident) and sampled weather cases were performed using MACCS2. The results of the analysis are summarized in terms ofmore » the effective dose equivalent as a function of distance along the downwind centerline of the plume. In addition, population doses for the workers and the public are presented. A brief code comparison between the MACCS2 and MESORAD computer codes is also presented. Modeling differences for the cloudshine and groundshine dose pathways are discussed. Finally, the dose results are summarized, and recommendations are provided that enable the reader to make quick estimates of downwind doses for different source terms that are scalable.« less
  • The SITE data base, the source of population and agricultural data for the CRRIS, has sufficiently coarse resolution that population dose and risk assessments for ANEMOS runs can be more than an order-of-magnitude in error. A new data base has been developed with population resolution on the scale of US Census enumeration districts. This data base incorporates county-level agricultural data that is distributed to the ed based on the estimated fraction of rural-farm population in each ed.   • This report summarizes information on historical waste loss events associated with tanks and piplines in the 241-A and 241-AX tank farms.
  • Models are derived for determining the risk of release to the atmosphere of radioactive materials during nuclear waste handling. Such releases might occur in three phases of the nuclear waste handling cycle: (1) at fuel reprocessing plants during handling and interim storage, (2) during transportation to a permanent storage area, or (3) at the permanent disposal area (federal waste repository). Gaussian diffusion equations for both plume- and puff-type releases are used with demographic models to assess relative integrated population doses. Given a unit release and assuming an equal accident probability, we conclude that the largest risk would be from amore » transportation accident in a metropolitan area. The effect of a release during transportation in a rural area or at a fuel reprocessing plant would be one to two orders of magnitude less, while at a federal waste repository the population dose would be three or more orders of magnitude less than for the metropolitan transportation accident.« less
