Title: Getty to mine McKittrick oil

Abstract

Getty Oil Co. is planning an open pit mining project for oil at McKittrick which, if successful, could aid significant reserves to the California oil picture. The target for the mining venture is an amount of oil estimated by the independent consulting engineering firm of DeGolyer and MacNaughton at 421 million bbl of probable in place oil. The oil is in shallow deposits of oil-impregnated diatomaceous sediments underlying 1,680 acres of land owned by Getty in the McKittrick area 35 miles southwest of Bakersfield. The estimated amount of oil Getty proposes to mine at McKittrick is almost double the 218 million bbl produced by the entire McKittrick field since its discovery more than 80 yr ago. Getty anticipates commencing a pilot plant operation late this year to evaluate the commercial feasibility and the environmental compatibility of extraction processes and to obtain engineering data to facilitate the design and construction of a full scale processing plant and related mining facilities and equipment should commercial mining operations appear practical.
