Differences in the structures of the K x-ray absorption edges of solid KMnO/sub 4/ and aqueous solutions of permanganate and manganate are reported. The applicability of synchrotron radiation to the determination of solution structures is demonstrated by these results. The extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) results for KMnO/sub 4/ (solid), KMnO/sub 4/ (aqueous), K/sub 2/MnO/sub 4/ (aqueous), and Mn(H/sub 2/O/sub 6/)/sup 2 +/ (aqueous) are tabulated together with reference values of those obtained by x-ray crystal data. The data show that MnO/sub 4//sup -/ acts as a unit in both solid and solution. The values for the metal-oxygen distances determined by EXAFS and x-ray crystal structure are in close agreement. The difference in the Mn-O bond distance ..delta..r between MnO/sub 4//sup -/ and MnO/sub 4//sup 2 -/ in solution is 0.042 A.
