Toughness in HSLA steel weldments
This study has demonstrated that Nb exerts a strong influence on the microstructure of weldments produced in HSLA steel for a range of cooling times representative of seam welds in line pipe. Through this influence a lath microstructure, characterized by low angle boundaries between laths and the absence of boundary ferrite, results. This microstructure understandably has poor impact properties. V exerts considerably less influence on weld metal microstructure. In fact the acicular ferrite structure surrounded by boundary ferrite characteristic of micro-alloy-free weld metal seems little affected by V content. As a result the impact properties of these weld metals are superior to those containing > 0.2% Nb. Mo exhibits a salutary effect in this microstructure by reducing the amount of boundary ferrite.
