Title: Photoelectron spectroscopy of the CH[sub 3]N[sup [minus]] ion

Abstract

We have observed the negative ion photoelectron spectrum of the methylnitrene ion, CH[sub 3]N[sup [minus]], and measured the electron affinity of methylnitrene, EA(CH[sub 3]N)=0.022[plus minus]0.009 hthinsp;eV. In addition to detaching the methylnitrene anion to the ground state of CH[sub 3]N([tilde X] hthinsp;[sup 3]A[sub 2]), we also detect the first electronically excited state of methylnitrene, [tilde a] hthinsp;[sup 1]E. We measure the singlet/triplet splitting to be [Delta]E([tilde a] hthinsp;[sup 1]E[minus][tilde X] hthinsp;[sup 3]A[sub 2])=1.352[plus minus]0.011 hthinsp;eV. The photoelectron spectrum of CH[sub 3]N [tilde a] hthinsp;[sup 1]E contains relatively sharp vibronic structure. Unlike the spectra from H[sub 2]CC[sup [minus]], the photoelectron spectra for CH[sub 3]N[sup [minus]] show no evidence for a barrier separating the rearrangement of singlet methylnitrene to methyleneimine, [sup 1][CH[sub 3]N] hthinsp;[r arrow] hthinsp;CH[sub 2][double bond]NH.
