Abstract

Various theoretical developments in lepton-pair production during the past year are reviewed. Results of the perturbative QCD investigations both in leading log approximation as well as beyond leading logs are summarized. Their failure to account for the data is described. Two possible views of phenomenological interpretations of the data are discussed. 32 references.

Recent experimental data and theoretical developments on the production of lepton pairs in hadron collisions are reviewed. With emphasis on the interplay between theory and experiment, the relevance of theoretical calculations to the data available at present energies is critically examined. The Drell--Yan mechanism is found to be phenomenologically dominant provided that the parton distribution functions contain effects of gluon radiation in a narrow cone. Explicit QCD perturbative calculations of the non-Drell--Yan type yield results that are apparently important at large transverse momenta, but are contradicated by subsequent data at 400 GeV and below. Inclusive distribution for lepton pair production was studied in QCD in an improved leading logarithms approximation that allows for large angle gluon correction. A formula is derived for arbitrary values of the dilepton transverse momentum. It does not factorize into the generalized Drell--Yan form. 10 references.

A nonscaling parton model is proposed to describe the large transverse momentum processes in hadron collisions. The scale noninvariance behavior of the parton momentum distribution is deduced from the recent ep and ..mu..p deep inelastic scattering data where gross violation of scaling has been observed. Power-law breaking effects are parametrized and utilized in the large-p/sub T/ calculations. The basic subprocess in which the large angle scattering occurs is taken to be between the partons only. New approach to lepton pair production. [Thermal parton model]

Arguments are first presented to suggest that perturbative QCD calculations cannot account for the average transverse momentum of the dileptons observed in hadronic collisions at present energies. Regarding the complication as being due to the many gluon interactions in the initial state, a thermal parton model is considered which is a combination of the thermodynamical model and the usual parton model. With practically no free parameter the observed features of can be reproduced with the correct dependences on the incident energy and the mass and rapidity of the dileptons.
