Levels in the hypernuclei /sub ..lambda..//sup 13/C, /sub ..lambda..//sup 14/N, and /sub ..lambda..//sup 18/O have been observed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. Study of such non closed shell hypernuclei represents a deviation from previous hypernuclear experiments which focused on even-even target nuceli. The hypernuclei were created with 800 MeV/c kaons in the (K/sup -/,..pi../sup -/) strangeness exchange reaction with scattering angles from 0/sup 0/ to 25/sup 0/, corresponding to momentum transfers from 50 to 330 MeV/c. The case of /sub ..lambda..//sup 13/C is a unique measurement which used an isotopically enriched benzene scintillator as the target. The large signal produced by the hyperon decay is an excellent signature of hypernuclear production. The resulting /sub ..lambda..//sup 13/C spectra have been interpreted theoretically in terms of a ..lambda.. hyperon coupled to a zero strangeness core to provide insights into the ..lambda..-nucleus and ..lambda..-nucleon interactions. Specifically, the data constrain the ..lambda..-nucleus residual interaction matrix elements and the (..lambda..-nucleus + ..lambda..-nucleon) spin orbit interaction. The experimental technique is also applicable to other hypernuclear studies, notably, ..sigma.., Xi, and ..lambda lambda.. hypernuclei.
