The effect of the generation of harmonics of the sound wave on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a plasma is analyzed. If there is a dispersion, the harmonics which are excited affect the phase of the fundamental ion acoustic wave, causing it to deviate from the optimum values for the interaction. As a result, the stimulated scattering is limited. The level of stimulated Brillouin scattering is derived for the particular case of a steady state. Analysis of the stability of the resulting steady-state solutions shows that, for this limitation mechanism, there can be no steady-state stimulated Brillouin scattering. Self-modulation regime of the stimulated scattering should take place.
