Abstract

A study was made of the use of a Taunton Engineering Company (TECO) RTS-100 automatic bag opener and a bag compactor to empty carbon black, clay, and other material from bags and to charge the bagged materials into a mixer at an adhesives, coatings, and sealant division of 3M Company in Grove City, Ohio. The potential hazards associated with this operation are the exposure to airborne dusts generated through handling of the bags and the physical stresses arising from lifting the 50 pound bags manually. The study showed that the TECO RTS-100 automatic bag opener and its trash compactor did not create dust emissions, with the exception of the dust emitted at the inlet to the system.

A control technology assessment of bag opening, emptying, and disposal operations at Rohm and Haas, Incorporated, Bristol, Pennsylvania, was conducted in June, 1984. Engineering controls for reducing airborne dust exposures during opening, emptying, and disposal of bags and drugs during the production of an acrylic polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) alloy were evaluated. Engineering controls consisted of process enclosure, local exhaust ventilation, automatic bulk-feed loading of PVC to the mixer, and floors and walls designed in a way that permitted an effective wash down of contaminated surfaces. An in-depth survey of dust exposure during weighout and transfer of powdered materials from bags or bins to smaller containers was conducted at BF Goodrich Company, Akron, Ohio in October, 1984. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate sources of worker dust exposure. Engineering controls consisted of two ventilated booths that were intended to capture whatever dusts were generated during weighout and transfer activities. The author concludes that although the booths control some dust generated during weigh out and transfer operations, worker dust exposure is still significantly elevated. Exposures could be reduced by correcting improper work practices.

A walk-through survey was conducted at the Cincinnati Chemical Processing Company, Batavia, Ohio where blending, grinding, spray drying, and packaging of various chemicals took place. Specific attention in this survey was given to the potential exposure to polybrominated biphenyls possible at the facility and to the evaluation of any possible associated health effects. A total of three employees worked for 9 months preparing about 140,000 pounds of PBB.
