The microstructure observed on the rapid solidification of dilute alloys of Cu in Al has been examined. A high intensity heat source, namely a 6 kW CO/sub 2/ laser beam was passed over the surface of and on regrowth a featureless zone is seen prior to a cellular morphology. Scanning transmission electron microscopy in conjunction with X-ray microanalysis show that a concentration gradient exists across this region. The results support the theory that it is a plane front zone formed during resolidification process.
