Electrical conductivity of molten mixtures of antimony(III) chloride-aluminum chloride and antimony(III) chloride-aluminum chloride-sodium chloride
- Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville
The electrical conductivity of SbCl/sub 3/-AlCl/sub 3/ mixtures was measured for melts containing 2.5-60.0 mol % AlCl/sub 3/ at tempertures ranging from 81-224/sup 0/C for 2.5 mol % AlCl/sub 3/ to 189-212/sup 0/C for 60.0 mol % AlCl/sub 3/. These data were accurately represented by the empirical equation ln kappa = A/sub 1/ - A/sub 2/T/sup -1/ - A/sub 3/T/sup 1/10/, where kappa is the specific conductivity and A/sub 1/, A/sub 2/, and A/sub 3/ are adjustable parameters. For melts containing 2.5 to 30.0 mol % AlCl/sub 3/, deviations from Arrhenius behavior were large, and in the range 2.5 to 10.0 mol % AlCl/sub 3/ the conductivity passed through a maximum T/sub m/ as a function of temperature. At 2.5 mol % AlCl/sub 3/ the maximum occurred at 180/sup 0/C with a specific conductivity of 0.00107 S cm/sup -1/. Isothermal conductivity-composition curves passed through maxima that shifted from 0.042 S cm/sup -1/ and 25 mol % AlCl/sub 3/ at 100/sup 0/C to 0.092 S cm/sup -1/ and 35 mol % AlCl/sub 3/ at 200/sup 0/C. Conductivity as a function of temperature up to about 225/sup 0/C was measured for SbCl/sub 3/-AlCl/sub 3/-NaCl melts containing 5.0 to 5.0, 10.0 to 5.0, and 10.0 to 10.0 mol % AlCl/sub 3/ and NaCl, respectively. It was found that at low temperatures the addition of NaCl to a SbCl/sub 3/-rich SbCl/sub 3/-AlCl/sub 3/ mixture results in a substantial conductivity decrease. Although the data for SbCl/sub 3/-AlCl/sub 3/ melts can be interpreted in terms of a Stokesian diffusional transport mechanism, the SbCl/sub 3/-AlCl/sub 3/-NaCl data favor the occurrence of a non-Stokesian chloride-exchange transport process in addition to Stokesian conductivity. 5 figures.
