Various papers on fiber-optic metrology and standards are presented. Individual topics addressed include: distributed optical fiber sensing, FELs as light sources for basic research, optical fiber measurements and standardization, OTDR calibration for attenuation measurement, French proposal for IEC/TC 86/WG 4 OTDR calibration, safety of optical fibers, fiber-optic measurement standards, measurement of physical parameters with special fibers, coherence and optical Kerr nonlinearity, fiber-optic gyroscopes in Japan, novel applications of monomode fiber tapes, fiber-optic amplitude-modulated sensors. Also discussed are: surface contouring using TV holography, new modulation scheme for optical fiber point temperature sensor, common-path optical fiber heterodyne interferometric current sensor, fiber-optic-based vortex shedder flow meter, high-speed polarimetric measurement for fiber-optic communications, wavelength-based sensor for the measurement of small angles, high-temperature optical sensor for displacement measurement, design of an optical fiber power supplying link.
