Title: Search for spontaneous fission tracks of superheavy nuclei in deep-sea nodule minerals

Journal Article · · Sov. At. Energy (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6288040

Tracks were investigated on the surfaces of over 20 feldspar crystals from ferro-manganese nodules extracted from the ocean bottom in an area of the south Pacific Ocean and also on the surfaces of several other feldspar crystals found in sediment cores in the same area. The length of the spontaneous fission tracks were measured in two albite crystals. The track lengths for induced fission of uranium were somewhat less than for spontaneous fission. In the second experiment a thin layer of uranium was deposited on a crystal containing 120 spontaneous fission tracks. The results indicated good prospects for the investigation of ferromanganese module material in the search for superheavy elements.
