Possibilities of microwave methods of producing a plasma (in Russian)
The current status of theoretical and experimental research into high pressure microwave discharges in molecular and inert gases is surveyed. It is shown that microwave discharges are not very promising with regard to obtaining an equilibrium plasma with relatively high temperature. Possible mechanisms for the establishment of a steady nonequilibrium state in simple mixtures of inert gases with molecular additions are considered. Attention is called to the possibilities offered by a new class of microwave discharges - the so-called moving discharges. Results of studies on the mechanisms of the motion of the ionization front in different gases and the properties of combined microwave and arc discharges and their stability in an external magnetic field are presented and discussed.
