Abstract

Americium processing at Rocky Flats Plant is described. The americium is recovered from plutonium metal by a pyrochemical process; the resulting molten salt extraction residues must be processed to recover americium. At present the process uses cation exchange with Dowex 50W-X8 resin, This work shows that a macroporous resin, BioRad AG MP-50, has 30 to 50% more capacity and better elution kinetics than Dowex 50W-X8. Two extraction methods, solvent extraction and extraction chromatography with an organophoshorus bidentate, are also described. Americium is effectively decontaminated from magnesium and aluminum, and recovered by these methods.

Chemical research studies for the recovery of americium at Rocky Flats

Americium is recovered from plutonium and pyrochemical waste salts at Rocky Flats by an aqueous chemical process. The process is a five-step operation: dissolution of the chloride salt, conversion from the chloride to the nitrate system by cation exchange, separation of plutonium by anion exchange, evaporation of the anion column effluent, and precipitation of americium as the oxalate. Scale-up of extraction chromatography using DHDECMP for the separation and purification of americium

A combined anion exchange - bidentate extraction chromatography process for separation and purification of americium from Molten Salt Extraction (MSE) residues has been successfully demonstrated on a pilot plant scale. The extraction chromatography process uses DHDECMP (dihexyl-N,N-diethylcarbamoylmethylene-phosphonate) adsorbed on Amberlite XAD-4 resin. The process effectively recovers and purifies americium from impurity elements such as aluminum, calcium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, lead and zinc. A total of 100 g of americium oxide has been recovered. Calorimetry analysis of the product oxide indicates an americium g/g of 0.852. Recovery and purification of americium from molten salt extraction residues

Americium recovery and purification development at Rocky Flats involves the testing of a combined anion exchange - bidentate organophosphorus liquid - liquid extraction or extraction chromatography process for separating americium from molten salt extraction residues. Laboratory-scale and preliminary pilot-plant results have shown that americium can be effectively recovered and purified from impurity elements such as aluminum, calcium, magnesium, plutonium, potassium, sodium, and zinc. The purified americium oxide product from the liquid - liquid extraction process contained greater than 95% AmO/sub 2/ with less than 1% of any individual impurity element.
