Title: Quarterly progress report on fission product behavior in LWRs for the period October--December 1978. [Fuel rods defected in a steam atmosphere]

Abstract

Current experimental efforts in this program are concerned with the quantitative characterization of fission product release from highly irradiated LWR fuel under hypothetical accident conditions that might exist if the temperature of the fuel were to exceed the upper limit temperature for a controlled LOCA (approx. 1200/sup 0/C) but not reach meltdown. The temperature range 1445 to 1610/sup 0/C has been explored in two tests, HT-2 and HT-3. Two additional tests with high-burnup H. B. Robinson Reactor fuel have been completed as part of the High Temperature Tests Series. The releases obtained for /sup 85/Kr, /sup 134/Cs, and /sup 129/I in these tests, which are significantly larger than those obtained in previously conducted tests at temperatures up to 1300/sup 0/C, suggest that some mechanism other than normal diffusion from either the gap or the UO/sub 2/ matrix governs the release behavior.
