West Germany's Siemens AG reviews recent developments in ion-exchange membranes and their applications. Improvements in chemical and mechanical stability of membranes make them increasingly attractive for electrodialysis, electrolysis, fuel cells, concentration-measurement cells, organic electrochemistry, and biomedical applications such as devices for implantation. Japan is using ion-exchange membranes for industrial-scale production of salt from seawater.
