A vertical striker operating at speeds up to 6 m/sec has been used to simulate material behavior during cutting, which eliminates additional effects accompanying cutting on lathes. A dielectric pressure sensor has been used to record the cutting force in a frequency range whose upper bound is set by the frequency characteristics of the tool. There is nonstationary strain as the swarf is formed, which is dependent on the properties of the material, the cutting rate, and the cut layer thickness.
