Title: Apparatus and method for improving radiation coherence and reducing beam emittance

Abstract

A partially coherent beam-shaped pulse of particles (referred to in the following as x-rays) is sectioned longitudinally into numerous beam-shaped pulses of smaller cross section. The diameter of these smaller beams more closely approaches the transverse coherence length desired in a particular experiment. The various beams are guided along separate paths which have different lengths in order to delay each pulse by a different period of time. The delayed pulses are then directed toward a rotating mirror which deflects them all along the same path, one after another. In this manner, a relatively wide and short beam-shaped pulse with poor transverse coherence is converted into a long, narrow pulse with good transverse coherence.
