Breakaway ball joint swivel coupling
Abstract
This patent describes a detachable safety device connected in a fuel line intermediate the nozzle and the conduit for coupling portions of the line together and for uncoupling when a predetermined excessive tensile force is applied externally to the fuel line, the device comprising first and second body members, one of the body members having a spherical portion, the other of the body members having a socket portion including an open end annular mouth having an inner periphery for receiving the spherical portion, each of the body members having a fluid passageway extending therethrough, each of the passageways having portals defining an inlet and an outlet, coupling means interconnecting the spherical portion to the socket portion for swiveling movement about a multiplicity of axes relatively to one another with the outlet of a first of the body members connected in flow communication with the inlet of the second of the body members to permit fuel to flow therethrough when the body members are coupled, the coupling means including a releasable annular retaining member disposed about part of the spherical portion.
