This article examines the effectiveness of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate in improving the low-temperature properties of residual fuel oils. Diesel fuel cuts are used to produce F-5 marine mazut and M-2.0 export mazut with the desired solid points and sulfur content. Improvement of the low-temperature properties of mazut not only lowers the solid point, but also reduces the amount of diesel fuel cuts that are used in blending the product. The results of laboratory tests indicate that the addition of no more than 0.1% of the pour depressant to mazuts can lower the solid point, depending on the component and hydrocarbon composition of the mazut, by 20-30/sup 0/C. The pour depressant can be added to either the diesel fuel or to the mazut. It is concluded that the use of the pour depressant in the export and marine mazuts can release up to 10-15% of the diesel fuel cuts, which not only raises the solid point of the mazut, but also increases the sulfur content and viscosity.
